Wanaka country singing starlet Jody Direen is about to embark on one of the busiest months of her career, despite walking away from her contract with Bear Grylls Ventures. Direen, 25, will open for intentional classic rock sensations Lynyrd Skynyrd, Starship and 10CC at the Gibbston Valley Winery Concert on Saturday which was expected to attract 15,000 people. Direen said ‘‘my main emotion is excitment at the moment. I’m really excited.’’ Singing centrestage at such a big event was a great step, she said. After a chance meeting at the Wanaka Lone Star last year Direen signed an exclusive deal with United States management company Bear Grylls Ventures after meeting with the television star. At the time she was the only personality signed by the company beside Bear Grylls. However, after six months she has decided to move on. ‘‘As time went on I felt I needed management more involved in the music business and not television,’’ she said. Direen will go to Australia’s three-day country music festival CMC Rocks the Hunter next month.
