Queenstown mountainbiker Kate Fluker hopes her win at the national championship will boost her chances of going to the Commonwealth Games. The 26-year-old took the honours in the elite cross country women’s race at the Whakarewarewa Forest in Rotorua. Meanwhile, Queenstown-based professional George Brannigan claimed his first national elite mountain bike title in the downhill event and Queenstown-based Alannah Columb and Harriet Latchem were second and third in the downhill women’s event.

Donald Hay

Light wind conditions saw organisers of the annual Donald Hay yacht race run, between Glenorchy and Queenstown this year, move the finishing line to a halfway point at Mt Nicholas. With little wind for up to five hours on Saturday, the 22 boats struggled to make headway. Queenstown man Hamish Jackson took line honours on the day while the race was won on handicap by Milton man Brian Hutton, on Chinook.
