Places elate, dismay
Eustace joins elite level, Wells disappointed
Wanaka racer Katharine Eustace’s 11th place finish at the Sochi Winter Olympics has been hailed as a ‘‘phenomenal’’ result by her Kiwi coaches. Eustace, 38, clawed back three spots in her final two runs of 58.69 and 58.54 seconds to claim a highly creditable final ranking in the women’s skeleton. New Zealand winter sports high performance director Ashley Light raved about the final finish of the Wanaka athlete while her coach Terry Holland said it propelled her into the elite level of women’s skeleton racers. ‘‘Finishing with that time was phenomenal,’’ Light said. Eustace’s 11th matches freeskier Jossi Wells’ 11th in the slopestyle final last week, as the best result so far for New Zealand in Sochi. Wells, 23, notched a highest score of 60.60, which was his first run in the final but it was a figure far behind that needed for a spot on the podium at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park. Wells labelled his effort in the final as disappointing. ‘‘I put it all on the line today,’’ he said. ‘‘We went out there to get on the podium. ‘‘I didn’t hold back and sometimes when you do that, you fall off.’’ Earlier, Well’s younger brother Beau-James missed out on the final, finishing 21st in what was a tense qualifying heat for skiers after a number of falls in the first round of runs. A gutted Bex Sinclair, 22, was left struggling to understand what had happened after two falls in qualifying ended her Olympic dream. Sinclair crashed early in her first run at the Sochi Winter Olympics halfpipe course but she looked more comfortable in her second run before falling again.
