Iceinline Central Inc – winter fun for the whole family!
It wouldn’t be winter in Central Otago without a spin around one of the area’s most unique attractions! Situated in picturesque Alexandra, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest outdoor ice skating rink is a full 60 x 30 meter Olympic sized Ice Hockey Arena!
Come along and skate in a friendly atmosphere with friends and family, or join up to one of the clubs! Relax in the warm, comfortable lounge, or register for an upcoming event. During the weekends, we want to encourage families to the rink with our special pricing as below. Adults $10.00; school age children $8.00; preschoolers $7.00 (includes skates); Skate hire $5.00. We also have our Weekend Family Special which covers Friday night, Saturday, Saturday Night and Sunday - $35 for a family of 2 adults and 3 children (per session). Extra children $8.00, skate hire for this special only $2.00.
We cater for birthday parties at the rink, providing birthday hats, balloons, a drink, and a platter of chips for all participants. Entry to the birthday child is free, other children attending are charged $10.00 each. These have proved to be very popular in the past and provide a safe environment where kids can have fun and mums don’t have to clean up the mess.
We have all the local schools, as well as schools from the wider Central Otago region, coming to the rink on a regular basis as part of their winter sports curriculum for tuition in figure skating, curling and ice hockey.
We also have Mums and Tots sessions on Tuesday mornings 9.30 – 10.30 am and Thursday afternoons 1 - 2 pm. Cost $10 adults, children entry/skate hire free. This is to encourage mums and/or dads to come along to the rink and socialize with other parents, have a tea or milo and a skate. All three codes – figure skating, hockey and curling, use the rink for their activities, providing tuition to children and adults. The rink is in use from early morning until late night, on a daily basis.
The lounge/kitchen facilities are also available for private hire such as notable birthdays and business functions. Ice hockey – 14th June: Senior Non checking 21st June: Midget grade 4-6 July: Erewhon Cup (Senior Ice hockey) 12th July: Peewees The Erewhon Cup is a competition that has been running since 1937, and is hosted on a rotational basis between rinks in Alexandra, Dunedin, Gore, Queenstown and Tekapo. This usually involves 8-10 teams who play for the prestigious Erewhon Cup over the course of the weekend, with the final game taking place on Sunday. (details for this weekend are yet to be confirmed). The local club is hosting the Otago/Southland Figure Skating Championships on 19th-20th July which may cater for up to 80 competitors. They also have their Ice Show in late July/early August. This is very popular every year, and showcases the progress the children have made throughout the season with their coaching sessions. The inter club curling competition runs every Monday and Wednesday during May and June, with social games each Thursday. Corporate (or social) curling has proved very popular with business houses, and individuals coming along for a series of games on Thursday nights. Encourage people to contact the rink to find about getting a game. This event continues to be very popular and introduces primary school children to curling, competing for a trophy. This year, it’s being held on Friday 4th July and has developed into a very competitive competition between schools. For further information, contact Nick Loughnan, on 448 6541. This is run on Tuesday and Friday of each week of the July holidays, starting at 10 am and going through to 12, and incorporates figure skating, ice hockey, and to a lesser extent, curling. This is primarily aimed at school age children coming to Alexandra for the holidays with their parents/grandparents, although it’s also open to local children not already involved in ice sports, and is an ideal way for them to get a taste of ice skating. In previous years we have had children coming from Queenstown, Wanaka, Cromwell and even further afield. Price includes entry, skate hire and the activity.
