Famed US musician to do Wanaka concert
Los Angeles musician Bill Cunliffe has been convinced by long-time friend, former Tonight Show band member and Wanaka resident Bruce Paulson to perform a one-off show.
Cunliffe, a Grammy and Emmy award winner, is a highly regarded pianist, composer and arranger.
Paulson and the Wanaka Concert Society jumped at the chance to have Cunliffe perform while he was in town visiting.
Paulson moved to Wanaka about seven years ago after a long career as a jazz musician in the United States. He played the trombone with the likes of Buddy Rich, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, B B King and Ringo Starr and for 20 years was a member of the NBC Tonight Show Band on the Johnny Carson Show, doing more than3000 shows.
Cunliffe has more than 25 CD projects to his credit and was not only recognised as great jazz musician but equally at home in the world of classical and sacred music.
The concert will feature his interpretation of songs of the Great American Songbook.
During his career Paulson and Cunliffe shared their skills, playing on several of each others albums.
Paulson urged people to go along to Cunliffe’s show.
‘‘He’s brilliant and entertaining,’’ he said.
