Famed US mu­si­cian to do Wanaka con­cert

Los Angeles mu­si­cian Bill Cun­liffe has been con­vinced by long-time friend, for­mer Tonight Show band mem­ber and Wanaka res­i­dent Bruce Paulson to per­form a one-off show.

Cun­liffe, a Grammy and Emmy award win­ner, is a highly re­garded pi­anist, com­poser and ar­ranger.

Paulson and the Wanaka Con­cert So­ci­ety jumped at the chance to have Cun­liffe per­form while he was in town vis­it­ing.

Paulson moved to Wanaka about seven years ago af­ter a long ca­reer as a jazz mu­si­cian in the United States. He played the trom­bone with the likes of Buddy Rich, Frank Si­na­tra, Ella Fitzger­ald, Ste­vie Won­der, Ray Charles, B B King and Ringo Starr and for 20 years was a mem­ber of the NBC Tonight Show Band on the Johnny Carson Show, do­ing more than3000 shows.

Cun­liffe has more than 25 CD projects to his credit and was not only recog­nised as great jazz mu­si­cian but equally at home in the world of clas­si­cal and sa­cred mu­sic.

The con­cert will fea­ture his in­ter­pre­ta­tion of songs of the Great Amer­i­can Song­book.

Dur­ing his ca­reer Paulson and Cun­liffe shared their skills, play­ing on sev­eral of each oth­ers al­bums.

Paulson urged people to go along to Cun­liffe’s show.
