Motocross club back on track
Queenstown rider Scott Columb was a surprise entry in the Central Otago MX Champs on Sunday, winning the senior-pro event.
Central Otago Motorcycle Club president Ivan Taylor said the former New Zealand champ was familiar with the Cromwell track, having trained there regularly, but this was the first time he competed at a meeting.
‘‘He brought a couple of friends who had a good time,’’ he said.
About 120 took part in the champs, with about one-third of participants children.
‘‘We try to promote the mini classes. They’re there for fun and they’re not allowed to protest the races. We probably have more trouble with the parents,’’ he quipped.
The veteran class was large also and included big names such as Brett Scammell, from Winton, and Dave Latta, of Dunedin.
Riders had travelled from as far afield as Christchurch for the annual competition which had been rebuilding in popularity
