Mo­tocross club back on track

Queen­stown rider Scott Columb was a sur­prise en­try in the Cen­tral Otago MX Champs on Sun­day, win­ning the se­nior-pro event.

Cen­tral Otago Mo­tor­cy­cle Club pres­i­dent Ivan Tay­lor said the for­mer New Zealand champ was fa­mil­iar with the Cromwell track, hav­ing trained there reg­u­larly, but this was the first time he com­peted at a meet­ing.

‘‘He brought a cou­ple of friends who had a good time,’’ he said.

About 120 took part in the champs, with about one-third of par­tic­i­pants chil­dren.

‘‘We try to pro­mote the mini classes. They’re there for fun and they’re not al­lowed to protest the races. We prob­a­bly have more trou­ble with the par­ents,’’ he quipped.

The vet­eran class was large also and in­cluded big names such as Brett Scam­mell, from Win­ton, and Dave Latta, of Dunedin.

Rid­ers had trav­elled from as far afield as Christchurch for the an­nual com­pe­ti­tion which had been re­build­ing in pop­u­lar­ity

It’s not just our dra­mat­i­cally. club.

‘‘We’ve been through a pe­riod of not many helpers but we’ve been build­ing steadily over the last cou­ple of years.’’
