Students rock to the coming apocalypse
Mount Aspiring College students will rock on for real when their biennial musical, Rock Apocalypse, opens next Wednesday.
Directed by the school’s head of drama, Emily McCrae, the show is described as ‘‘a rock’n’roll party, which is a parody and tongue-in-cheek tribute to horror and sci-fi B-grade movies from the 1950s to the present day’’.
About 110 students are taking part in this piece of pure pastiche that imitates their grandparents’ era, ethos and music.
‘‘But it doesn’t matter if you don’t recognise some of the lines, or get the jokes or the context, it’s still entertaining,’’ McCrae says.
A student-led orchestra, a choreographic and technical team along with key staff members will stage this big, ambitious production, where the audience is taken on a strange journey, with a megalomaniac ex-rock’n’roll superstar who wants to take over the world, a bunch of zombies and an innocent but troubled married couple.
Originating in the UK, Rock Apocalypse was composed by Simon Haynes and written by Adrian Cross.
