Masterchef star’s recipe for success
Mirror welcomes a new food column from chef
The Mirror is thrilled to introduce one of New Zealand’s highest profile amateur chefs as our newest food writer. Arrowtown woman Bec Stanley became a household name when she competed to become New Zealand’s first Masterchef Duo with friend Jaimie Stodler earlier this year.
The pair ended up runners-up to sisters Karena and Kasey Bird from Maketu but have been in hot demand since.
Stanley, mother of Charlie, 9, Oscar, 7, and Willi, 5, has been busy giving demonstrations for corporate events, the Queenstown Winter Festival and fundraisers for the likes of Ronald McDonald House, local Scouts groups and Rotary.
With a business partner she has also developed a bottled mineral water product they are now ready to take to the market in China, targeting affluent Chinese with disposable incomes.
‘‘Now we’re trying to find a distributor in China – which is the hard part.’’
Ready to turn her hand to something else in the food industry, Stanley is now keen to share some of what she learned with Mirror readers.
‘‘It’s a great opportunity for me to be able to pass on some of the knowledge I learned in the competition and to demonstrate to people that cooking can be fun, easy and not a daunting task.’’
She promised to keep the recipes she shared with readers creative, healthy, affordable and yummy and would use lots local and seasonal produce - expect to see a duck recipe soon.
While some recipes would be suitable for a family meals, others would be the kind of thing you could serve at a dinner party to impress the guests.
There would probably be quite a strong Asian influence, given the years she had lived in the region, she said.
Husband Toby and the boys would likely be the guinea pigs for much of what she would prepare.
The blokes in her life were also a large part of the motivation that got her through three months of filming last year and it was great to be able to show her kids it was cool to do something out of her comfort zone: ‘‘To be criticised and take it on board and then get up and try harder.’’ ◗ Masterclass with Bec Stanley – page 18
