Member is still tracking after 40 years in club
Alexandra man Steve Tohill has achieved a 40-year milestone as a member of the Alexandra Harrier and Walkers Club.
Spokesman Gary Hesson presented Tohill with a life membership badge in recognition of his time with the club.
‘‘The club operated as the winter section of the Alexandra Amateur Athletic Club from 1969 and membership records from 1974 show Steve was a junior boy in the club way back then.’’
With the Clyde Dam all go in the 1980s, club membership rose to 60 to 70 runners, with some strong competitive athletes, he said.
Steve represented the club regularly in events around Otago and Southland , including the Clyde-Alex 10km race where he recorded a respectable best time of 34:16. The club had organised the annual Clyde Dam to Alexandra 10km Race Day for the past 45 years, Hesson said.
In 1992, the club introduced a walking section and in 1998 became Alexandra Harrier & Walkers Club Inc. The club meets every Saturday afternoon during winter and usually buses out to experience routes in surrounding areas. With a current membership close to 100, new members were always welcome – particularly runners, who now form the minority of the membership, he said. ◗ Full details of membership, the walk/run programme and this year’s 10km Race Day in August can be found on the club’s website at www.alexharriers.co.nz
