Queenstown skier Alice Robinson continued her winning form at the weekend. She won the women’s under-14 section of the giant slalom at Cardrona during the Junior Interfield ski racing on Sunday after winning the same category and being the fastest racer across all categories in the combi (slalom and GS course) a week earlier at Coronet Peak. At Cardrona, she was second by 1 sec to Ben Richards, of Cardrona, who was first in the under-16 men’s. Eden Mckay, who was first in the under-16 women’s, posted the third fastest time of the day.
Wanaka’s Braden Currie finished a gritty second in Scanno, at Xterra Italy, on Saturday. After fighting back from a huge fall on the mountainbike section, he played his ‘‘get out of jail card’’ on the run, finishing second, about 4 mins behind Spanish world champion Ruben Ruzafa. He also held off five-time world Xterra champion, South Africa’s Conrad Stoltz. His race schedule has been full-on since he began competing in Europe – with four off-road triathlons in five weeks, so far securing a win and three seconds in the ultra-competitive Xterra championship. He faces another two races in the Euro circuit.
