Wakatipu High takes control
A strong Wakatipu High School A team steamrolled Queenstown stalwarts Chicos/ABL in the third quarter to claim the Wakatipu Netball premier championship for the second year on Saturday.
Wakatipu Netball Centre president and coach of the Chicos/ABL team Kay O’Connell said the majority of the high school team were year 13 players who had come through the competition as an age group.
‘‘We’re getting old . . . and it’s just their time,’’ she said.
After the first quarter there was just two points between the teams and that remained the same in the second. However, the high school team took off in the third, finishing it ahead 26-15.
‘‘Chicos actually won the last quarter, which was interesting as the high school team are pretty fit.’’
Also working in the high school team’s favour was the fact that their coaches Lisa Murphy and Sherrie Gwerder were playing against them.
With only four teams in the premier grade it was difficult to find more competition and the addition of a country-wide round of competition with Wanaka and Alexandra-based teams this season had been a bonus for all teams.
The high school players would now move to representative teams and age group competitions while the MVPs for the season and other awards would be given out at the end of season dinner on August 16.
In other finals on Saturday, Wakatipu High School B beat Harcourts 24-17 to win the Senior A final; and Wakatipu HS’s development B beat the high school’s 9B 17-15 to win the Senior B final.
