Bee Aware Month
September is Bee Aware Month, to raise public awareness about the importance of being good to our New Zealand bees. According to the National Beekeepers Association, over $5 billion of New Zealand’s agricultural exports depended on these airborne pollinators and honeymakers. New Zealanders need to play a role in preventing bee losses occurring, through the use of pesticides and diminishing bee-foraging areas. More information: nba.org.nz
Calling all boaties
October 17–24 has been declared Safer Boating Week this year. In 2013, 19 people, mainly men, were killed in boating incidents, and so far this year, 14 boaties had already died, Maritime New Zealand’s deputy director and forum chair Lindsay Sturt said. He aimed to get three simple messages through to boat owners which included boat preparation, gear checking and knowing the rules. More information: saferboating.org.nz.
