Card­board boats just part of fun

New multi-dis­ci­plined race to add to fes­ti­val

Rub­ber ducks, trol­leys, card­board boats and moun­tain bikes will all be set to be raced at Labour Week­end as an ac­tion packed Wanakafest re­turns.

This year’s fes­ti­val, be­ing hosted by the Wanaka Com­mu­nity Trust, will pro­vide a di­verse lineup of events.

The fun will be kicked off on Oc­to­ber 22 with a street party fea­tur­ing food stalls, a pop up mar­ket and free lo­cal mu­sic into the night.

The Di­nosaur Park will be a hub for chil­dren with ac­tiv­i­ties be­ing held and the in­cred­i­ble Puzzling World Imag­i­na­tion Sta­tion be­ing set up.

Lo­cal event favourites back by popular de­mand in­clude the Ro­tary Rub­ber Duck Race, Ray White Po­lar Plunge, Waste­busters Trol­ley Derby and the Card­board Boat Race.

Ath­letic lo­cals will be able to take part in the ac­tion in the Ur­ban Down­hill, ex­er­cise their en­durance at the Rac­ers Edge Deans Bank 10-hour race and, for the first time, the Red Bull De­fi­ance Race will be held.

The de­fi­ance race in­volved a two-day 153.25km mul­ti­dis­ci­plined race which will see com­peti­tors moun­tain­bik­ing and up­hill run­ning across farm tracks, four-wheel-drive cour­ses and other var­ied ter­rain sur­round­ing Wanaka.

On Oc­to­ber 23 a Rip­pon Open Day will be held as part of cel­e­bra­tions for it be­ing 100 years on the land.

Fam­ily fun: Crowds cheer on com­peti­tors in the card­board boat race held at a Wanakafest. The event will re­turn as part of the 2014 Wanakafest at Labour Week­end.
