Cardboard boats just part of fun
New multi-disciplined race to add to festival
Rubber ducks, trolleys, cardboard boats and mountain bikes will all be set to be raced at Labour Weekend as an action packed Wanakafest returns.
This year’s festival, being hosted by the Wanaka Community Trust, will provide a diverse lineup of events.
The fun will be kicked off on October 22 with a street party featuring food stalls, a pop up market and free local music into the night.
The Dinosaur Park will be a hub for children with activities being held and the incredible Puzzling World Imagination Station being set up.
Local event favourites back by popular demand include the Rotary Rubber Duck Race, Ray White Polar Plunge, Wastebusters Trolley Derby and the Cardboard Boat Race.
Athletic locals will be able to take part in the action in the Urban Downhill, exercise their endurance at the Racers Edge Deans Bank 10-hour race and, for the first time, the Red Bull Defiance Race will be held.
The defiance race involved a two-day 153.25km multidisciplined race which will see competitors mountainbiking and uphill running across farm tracks, four-wheel-drive courses and other varied terrain surrounding Wanaka.
On October 23 a Rippon Open Day will be held as part of celebrations for it being 100 years on the land.
Family fun: Crowds cheer on competitors in the cardboard boat race held at a Wanakafest. The event will return as part of the 2014 Wanakafest at Labour Weekend.
