Coast­guard gets recog­ni­tion

Coast­guard Wanaka Lakes missed out on two na­tional ex­cel­lence awards at the Coast­guard New Zealand awards cer­e­mony in Auck­land last week­end.

Wanaka coast­guard pres­i­dent Jonathan Walmis­ley and the Wanaka unit were both in the run­ning for awards after re­cently win­ning re­gional awards for unit support vol­un­teer of the year and unit of the year.

Walmis­ley said the unit award was won by Lake Taupo while the vol­un­teer award was won by North Shore.

Walmis­ley was nom­i­nated for the unit support award be­cause of his roles as pres­i­dent, train­ing support of­fi­cer and fundraiser.

The unit was in­volved in three search and res­cue op­er­a­tions last year.
