For­mer Alexan­dra man Ben Whi­taker is do­ing his bit to over­come poverty in Ar­gentina. Mary-Jo To­hill catches up with him dur­ing a fleet­ing visit home.

Ben Whi­taker is mak­ing a snack.

It’s the type of sand­wich he likes, full of let­tuce, tomato and cu­cum­ber.

The for­mer Alexan­dra man, who helped his par­ents Judy and Alan Whi­taker start the Court­house Cafe´ in 2002, is no stranger to food prepa­ra­tion.

He now owns an award-win­ning Mel­bourne cafe´ in the af­flu­ent south Yarra River area, called The Fi­nal Step, which funds his hu­man­i­tar­ian work.
