A Cromwell software developer has broken into the North American market proving there is more to Central Otago exports than just stonefruit and wine.

Co-founder of Au, Duncan Faulkner, said his online safety management system, which was developed to help small to medium sized businesses manage health and safety better, was being exported to North American adventure training camps.

‘‘It is very exciting to be breaking into the North American market to export software from Central Otago. It’s is a fantastic opportunity, and to develop a local tech industry from Cromwell is great.’’

While the company was enjoying growth into US, as well as UK markets, Faulkner would remain locally based.

‘‘I am committed to keeping the company based out of Central Otago as we grow internationally. It shows that there is more to exports coming out of Central Otago than just wine and stonefruit.’’

Faulkner had formed a partnership with Chuck Kroeker, a Canadian with 15 years’ experience in the United States adventure camp sector. He had been living in New Zealand but returned to Canada to establish Auditz North America.

‘‘He will set up Auditz in North America to manage that demand but it will still be owned by Auditz New Zealand. He has been over there already and attended a camping association conference and was overwhelmed by the interest. There is huge potential for safety management softpecially in the adventure market. There are thousands of adventure camps across the United States. We have already got people over there using the software. It’s exciting because the money will still come back to New Zealand.’’

Faulkner said when the software was launched last year, the company targeted adventure tourism operators ahead of the changing safety management laws which required them to become audited. However, other industries had picked up the software.

‘‘We have been overwhelmed with interest from all industries around New Zealand – commercial refrigeration and transport have been huge for us.

‘‘We have also been approached by a number of people from the US and UK.’’
