Queenstown women win national bowls title
Three Queenstown women have won a national bowls title.
Queenstown Bowling Club members Margaret O’Connor, Christine Buchanan and Debra Floyd won the New Zealand triples title at the National Club Championships in Tauranga two weeks ago.
O’Connor said that after five matches in two days the win came down to the wire.
‘‘Our last two games we only won by one and two. We had to win or Nelson would have taken the title.’’ The trio were delighted to win. ‘‘We just gathered in the middle. It was a very exciting moment. We all hugged on the green and realised we’d won.’’
It is not the first title for O’Connor and Buchanan, who won the pairs final at the New Zealand Open bowls tournament in Auckland last year after taking the triples a year earlier but this was their first ‘‘true’’ New Zealand title, O’Connor said.
To qualify they won the club title for the Central Otago region, then the southern regional title (from Timaru south) and then played against the other five regions for the national title. They were the only bowlers from Central Otago to make the cut.
Their prize was a bar and the aim is to collect five bars to earn a silver bar and then a gold bar.
With O’Connor and Buchanan in their 60s and Floyd in her 50s, they could collect a few more yet.
‘‘I don’t know about that [winning gold] but we’re having a lot of fun trying.’’
The win capped off a good year for the women after their previous successes and O’Connor being named Central Otago’s female player of the year. It was also great for the club, she said.
‘‘We’re trying to attract new members and now they know we’re a go-ahead club.’’
O’Connor and Buchanan are looking forward to playing in the Australian Open in a couple of months time, and having a bit of time away with their very supportive husbands.
