Inspiration for a cosy winter get-together
An evening that is ‘a bit foodie, a bit crafty and a whole lot of creative’
She may live in Auckland but Susan Elijas has some specialist knowledge on celebrating winter.
Much of what she has learned comes from the Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market) in Salzburg, Austria, where she has spent time with her European-born husband.
‘‘You drink mulled wine watching iceskaters on outside rinks. It’s snowy and cold and beautiful. It’s a really inspiring place to be.’’
She will draw on that experience and her work as a creative stylist for the Queenstown Winter Festival workshop she presents this year.
Elijas’ work is seen in NZ House and Garden and Good magazines as well as on television shows Good Morning and Breakfast TV. She has also been creative stylist on three of Jo Seager’s cookbooks and illustrated two children’s books.
She says the festival workshop will focus on creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere for awinter get-together. Creative stylist Susan Elijas will run a Queenstown Winter Festival workshop on Inspiring Winter Celebrations.
It comes with inventive home styling including warming decor and sensational winter table settings. Once the table is set, she will get into making tasty canapes.
‘‘It’s about having a group of women together to inspire them creatively to do different things. Sometimes you need a bit of inspiration,’’ she tells the Mirror.
‘‘They are really simple ideas that look really effective but don’t take that much effort.’’
She promises simple yet amazing delicious ideas for food including canapes, sweet treats and winter warming drinks including mulled wine.
‘‘I’ve also got a lovely nonalcoholic version and, yes, there will be little tastings.’’
The evening is ‘‘a bit foodie, a bit crafty and a whole lot of creative,’’ she says.
Elijas says she has always done creative things. She still works at Avondale College but is part time in the marketing department working in photography and journalism, which allows her to do the other ‘‘fun stuff’’.
‘‘I used to do card making or book making or helping out with different friends’ weddings. Then I was to do venues, then to do workshops. One thing leads to
Mirror another. It’s been a delightful journey of creativity. There’s always something going on.’’
