Ratepayers oppose paving way

Central Otago Mirror - - WANAKA NEWS -

I deeply resent, and protest in the strongest terms, ratepayer’s money being used to subsidise a $95,000 ‘‘cost over-run’’ on the footpath alterations outside Fergburger in Shotover St.

This is clearly a highly successful and lucrative business which should pay the entire expense of accommodating its mass of customers.

At a time of financial constraint when funding is not available for far more worthy and necessary projects this is a serious abrogation of QLDC fiscal responsibility.

Jon Mitchell: This is absolutely ridiculous. Why should ratepayers and other eating establishments paying footpath dining levies be subsidising a business that is reducing parking, constricting an already overloaded street, and competing against other similar businesses. The whole process is highly questionable and the outcomes extremely disappointing. When my parents owned the site that much of Ferg’s is on now, back in the 60s to mid-70s, when they built Queenstown’s first shopping mall and established the district’s first BYO restaurant, they didn’t expect ratepayer handouts. When they owned businesses in then Ballarat St now The Mall, they had to pay for ‘‘new’’ car parks off Church St as The Mall was established. They were all for pedestrianising downtown Queenstown back then, and were prepared to pay for it – even when the top tax rate was 66 per cent. Why on earth does Ferg’s deserve a council mandated ratepayer handout in this day and age? This is quite bizarre.

Carrie Whyte: Isn’t it standard practice if your business outgrows it’s premises you move? They should’ve taken over the building that Outside Sports was in and made a Mega Ferg venue!

Vladka Kennett: Absolutely outrageous and totally unacceptable!!! How is it possible in a democratic country that the taxpayers support a PRIVATE business???? From their own pockets? EXCUSE ME????

Coral Douglas: That’s insane!! I feel my rates would be far better spent elsewhere!! We should not be propping up private business!! Not on!!!
