Whisky mash tun set up in Cardrona
A new mash tun (brewing vessel) was lifted into place at the Cardrona Distillery and Museum in Cardrona last week. The distillery will also feature two handbeaten copper whisky stills, one containing 2000 litres of single malt and the other, 1300 litres. Both have been imported from Scotland. A third German-made still will be used for making vodka. The distillery will also make rose oil. Amalgamated Builders is overseeing the project for Wanaka businesswoman Desiree Whittaker.
March dates for Race to the Sky
The Cardrona Race to the Sky hill climb will be repeated next year, as promised by Highlands Motorsport Park owner Tony Quinn. Race weekend is March 18-20, which is Otago Anniversary Weekend. Repco is continuing as sponsor. Australia-based Scotsman Alister McRae won this year in the Vantage-backed Subaru Impreza WRX used by the late Kiwi rally legend Possum Bourne to win the event in 2001. The event was revived this year after being in limbo since 2007. Event organiser Mike Sentch said that the success of April’s race left ‘‘no doubt in our minds that the event would return on an annual basis’’.
