Hundreds of people flocked to 2pm event to enjoy a range of community activities organised by Kahu Youth.
It included a hangi and an early evening fireworks display. Matariki is the Maori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades.
It rises in the mid-winter and for many, heralds the start of a new year.
