Cel­e­brat­ing Grad­u­a­tion of Te Wananga in Wanaka on Satur­day were, from left, Doug Bray, Si­mon Scaife, Lorraine Flax weaver Jac­que­line Stewart of In­ver­cargill and Ruby Smith, 6, of Wanaka cre­ate a putiputi (flower) dur­ing a work­shop at Matariki cel­e­bra­tions held at the lake­front Di­nosaur Park in Wanaka on Satur­day.

Hun­dreds of peo­ple flocked to 2pm event to en­joy a range of com­mu­nity ac­tiv­i­ties or­gan­ised by Kahu Youth.

It in­cluded a hangi and an early evening fire­works dis­play. Matariki is the Maori name for the clus­ter of stars also known as the Pleiades.

It rises in the mid-win­ter and for many, her­alds the start of a new year.
