Wanaka Re­tire­ment Vil­lage res­i­dents en­joy its per­fect po­si­tion on the flat near the lake and town.

Work be­gins on stage one of the As­pir­ing en­liven Care Cen­tre in Wanaka next month.

A part­ner­ship be­tween Pres­by­te­rian Sup­port Otago (PSO) and As­pir­ing Lifestyle Re­tire­ment Vil­lage, the new three-stage $15 mil­lion care cen­tre ad­ja­cent to the Wanaka Med­i­cal Cen­tre will more than triple the num­ber of aged care rooms in the area.

Stage one in­cludes a 20 room de­men­tia fa­cil­ity, the first time residential care for those with de­men­tia has been of­fered in the re­gion.

Along with 19 rest home/ hos­pi­tal rooms, there will also be the Up­per Clutha Hos­pice Trust suite. The care cen­tre ex­pects to em­ploy 35-40 staff, from reg­is­tered nurses to care­givers and sup­port staff, when stage one is opened later next year. In Alexan­dra PSO plans to add a fur­ther four new units to Ranui Court Re­tire­ment Vil­lage. The units, each two-bed­room, will front Tar­bert St on the north side of the cur­rent vil­lage site. Ten­ders are ex­pected to be called later in the year. These plans will be shown to the com­mu­nity dur­ing a public meet­ing held in con­junc­tion with the Re­tire­ment Vil­lages As­so­ci­a­tion New Zealand in Alexan­dra on Thurs­day Au­gust 20.
