Free park-and-ride service to ease traffic
Visitors to this year’s Show are being offered a free park-and-ride shuttle service to the lakeside Showgrounds. The initiative is a trial this year, to be held on the second day of the Show. It is aimed at helping ease traffic and parking congestion in central Wanaka as more than 35,000 people converge on the Wanaka Showgrounds and the adjacent Pembroke Park for the twoday event. Drivers are able to park their cars on signposted private land on Enterprise Drive, off Ballantyne Rd. Two buses will run every 15 minutes to the Wanaka Showgrounds between 8.30am-5.30pm. Show organiser Jane Stalker says the move is in response to feedback from visitors about finding it hard to get a car park at the event, which emerged from an independent economic impact report on the 2015 Show.
‘‘We’ve taken on board that feedback and think we’ve come up with a good solution for our visitors. We hope people will support the free shuttle service so it can become a permanent feature of the Show,’’ she says.
The move has also been endorsed by the Wanaka Police, she says.
‘‘We know how busy Wanaka gets at Show weekend with people coming from all over New Zealand to experience our event, so it’s good to be able to help ease the pressure on parking.’’
