Pie lovers get excited: the top spot for vegetable pies has been revealed.

Wanaka and Queenstown based Kai Pai bakery’s vege pies were named the best in the country when they won the Bakels supreme pie awards.

Pie maker Jason Danielson has been making the vegetarian pie since 2010 and said it was an honour to receive an award.

‘‘Our vegetarian pie is very popular in Queenstown and Wanaka as well as throughout the country, so to have nationwide recognition is fantastic,’’ he said.

His winning vege pie contains pumpkin, broccoli, cauliflower, swede, and carrot in a creamy pumpkin sauce.

Seven years ago Danielson started working at the Queenstown Bakery on Shotover St, and turned the small retail bakery into a wholesale business that served the tourism and hospitality businesses in the area.

Bakery owner Ian Warner said he was thrilled and proud of their ‘‘fantastic’’ achievements.

‘‘From humble beginnings in Queenstown, we have gone from making 1000 hand-crafted pies a day, to now employing 45 staff across Wanaka and Queenstown and producing 10,000 pies a day,’’ he said.

Two years ago the bakery received two awards – top bacon and egg and top vegetable pie. They aim to win in the commercial category next year.
