Queenstown biker ready for Rampage

Central Otago Mirror - - CLASSIFIEDS - RHYS CHAMBERLAIN

If riding your mountainbike off 100ft dips and drops scares you, you might think what Queenstown man Conor Macfarlane does is crazy.

The 25-year-old freeride mountainbiker has been selected to attend the ultimate event in downhill mountainbiking, the Red Bull Rampage in Utah.

Speaking from Whistler, Canada, Macfarlane was excited for the October 14 event in Zion National Park.

‘‘They are the biggest jumps in the world basically.

‘‘It’s definitely pretty dangerous. It’s pretty gnarly,’’ he said

Macfarlane received one of nine wildcard entries after sub- mitting photos and videos of his exploits to organisers. In all, 21 will compete, with the other 12 earning automatic entry from last year’s event. It is Macfarlane’s second invite to Rampage.

He has the potential to win $75,000 in prize money.

It was ‘‘not very likely’’ he would win, he said, but he was hoping to finish in the top five.

Riders like last year’s winner Kurt Sorge or fellow Canadian Brandon Semenuk would be the favourites, he said.

‘‘You never know [I could].’’ Macfarlane competed in about four or five major events throughout the year and other smaller events including the Queenstown Bike Festival, which was held over Easter this year.

Queenstown man Conor Macfarlane will compete in the Red Bull Rampage in Zion National Park in October.
