Election campaign kicks off
Let the battle begin.
Local body election nominations have closed and Central Otago has a mix of old and new faces vying for seats on the council and community boards.
Some candidates have no fight to put up for one of the 10 places around the council table, including incumbent councillors Neil Gillespie, Nigel McKinlay, Shirley Calvert, Stuart Duncan, Stephen Jeffery and Malcolm Topliss who all get a green-light to council with the same number of nominations received as seats.
Newbie Victoria Bonham, of Galloway, also gets a seat on council representing the EarnscleughManuherikia Ward.
‘‘I was ready for a good, hard slog campaigning so it kind of threw me a bit,’’ Bonham said.
Alexandra is a different story. Seven candidates want three available seats, including incumbent councillor Martin McPherson - who is also contest- ing the mayoralty. He joins Central Otago lawyer Tim Cadogan and incumbent Tony Lepper as mayoral candidates.
Incumbent councillor Barrie Wills is seeking re-election, as are Roger Browne, Lynley Claridge, Claire Goudie, Barry Hambleton and Sharleen Stirling-Lindsay.
There will be new faces around the Cromwell Community Board with Glen Christiansen, Tom Pinckney and Helen Hucklebridge stepping down at the end of this term. The seven battling it out for four seats include Gordon Stewart, Annabel Blaikie, Robin Dicey, Alistair Hamilton, Anna Harrison and Werner Murray.
Vincent Community Board hopefuls include Roger Browne, Brian Fitzgerald, Claire Goudie, Barry Hambleton and Sharleen Stirling-Lindsay. James Arm- strong, Nadia Fodie and Russell Garbutt will battle it out for the two Earnscleugh-Manuherikia seats.
The Teviot Valley Community Board’s four seats are contested by Sally Feinerman, Raymond Gunn, Clifford Parker, John Pritchard and Russell Read. The Maniototo Community Board received the same number of nominations as seats so candidates Susan Evans, Robert Hazlett, Duncan Helm and Susan Umbers will be elected.
Victoria Bonham will represent the Earnscleugh-Manuherikia Ward on the Central Otago District Council.
