Central Otago Mirror - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE -

I have found the Rio Olympics disappointing.

Not due to the New Zealand’s record medal haul nor the heart warming stories of our athletes and others achieving and displaying the kind of sportsmanship I want my children to grow up with.

No, my problem has been the lack of coverage and thus the lack of engagement for myself and my family.

We don’t have Sky at home. We were priced out of that luxury a couple of years ago.

Other media have not broadcast the events and this has meant we have seen no complete games or races nor watched any medals being won.

The Mirror’s publishers Fairfax NZ is one of several companies who have had a spat with Sky over coverage rights and I don’t pretend to understand the issues.

But I do know that the Olympics is something we all want to participate in - not feel excluded from.
