Bank concerns go to capital

Maniototo’s concerns over the proposed closure of Ranfurly’s only bank have gone straight to Wellington.

Westpac is proposing to close its Ranfurly branch, along with 18 others around the country.

Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean met with a Westpac representative on September 1 and said it was ‘‘productive’’.

The bank’s proposed closure of its Ranfurly branch had upset the Maniototo community and she made a commitment to residents at a community meeting on August 19 that she would take their cause to Westpac senior management in person.

‘‘[Thursday’s] meeting in Wellington gave me the opportunity to clearly outline the serious and legitimate concerns held by the wider community at this proposed closure. I also took the opportunity to present the many submissions I have received from residents and businesses through my electorate office. The representative that I spoke with listened and took on board those concerns and accepted the submissions.

‘‘I can’t say what the outcome will be. Government can’t force the bank to keep the branch open and we can only rely on moral persuasion to make a difference. I can only hope that the bank will truly listen to its customers and find a way to compromise so there is a service for this area.’’
