‘Best yet’ Asian food at Night Noodle Mart

Central Otago Mirror - - WHAT’S ON - DEBBIE JAMIESON

The Queenstown Night Noodle Markets will provide the ‘‘best mix yet’’ as the event works its way through New Zealand, organisers say.

Fairfax Media NZ events manager Brett McMeekin said the 14 vendors represented cuisine from across Asia, including Filipino food, Japanese, Malaysian, Nepalese, Chinese and Vietnamese.

Several local Queenstown vendors, including Taco Medic, Madam Woo, Erik’s Noodles and The Shan’s Kitchen would be joined by vendors from all over New Zealand and Hoy Pinoy, from Australia.

Hoy Pinoy was the top selling vendor in all Australian and New Zealand noodle markets with their Filipino chicken skewer in traditional marinade and pork belly skewer in banana ketchup glaze - which would sell for two for $12.

‘‘They’re awesome,’’ McMeekin said. ‘‘I’ve tried to get their secret out of them but they won’t tell me.’’

Despite the name of the markets, there was a lot more available than just noodles.

Dumplings were an Asian staple, and Christchurch eatery Pot Sticker would be bringing a pork and garlic variety and chicken with coriander (both $10).

Momo Said Dumplings, of Christchurch, would bring Nepalese dumplings with chicken, pork and vegetable all on the menu ($12).

Dunedin-based Khmer Satay Aways would be selling their famous satays ($10).

New local favourite Taco Medic would be selling their own fusion version with a gluten free sticky pork taco and a Thai mushroom and cucumber salsa Taco (both $7).

Another Queenstown newcomer, Erik’s Fish and Chips, will be transforming into Erik’s Noodles for five days and will sell Asian Lamb Noodles fusing northern Chinese spices with New Zealand lamb (small $6, large $10) and a sweet dish - Thai Crepes, filled with banana, coconut cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce ($5.50)

The Night Noodle Markets will be open on Queenstown’s lakefront (Marine Parade) Wednesday September 28 - Sunday October 2 with an array of Asian style food and entertainment on offer. Entry is free, gates open 4 PM weekdays and 1 PM weekends. More information at facebook.com/thenightnoodlemarketsnz. Full menu can be viewed at: stuff.co.nz
