Central Otago Mirror - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE - Debbie Jamieson

On Saturday night I had the privilege of attending the annual honours and awards dinner for the Queenstown, Frankton and Arrowtown fire brigades.

This year the Wakatipu brigades honoured 406 years of service by volunteers, including 45 years by station officer Stu Ide who started in the brigade at the age of 19, and station officer Grant Bewley who was awarded a 25-year gold star.

Amazingly, Bewley managed 88 per cent attendance during that time.

Trophies for attendance and dedication were given to qualified firefighter Marc Manderson, of Frankton, and senior firefighter Preston Rogers-Brown, of Queenstown.

Of course, they are not alone. Throughout Central Otago and the Upper Clutha we have hundreds of men and women from different backgrounds and professions who give their time and expertise to protecting their communities.

Thank you for what you do.
