Commonwealth Games goal
Cromwell squash stalwart Jackie Hamilton is on a Commonwealth Games journey - and she has it in her sights.
Hamilton has achieved a lot of firsts for women in the referee world, and most recently she achieved an Oceania regional referee status and Squash New Zealand awarded her the 2016 Derek Cook Memorial Trophy for her services to the sport.
‘‘I have been gradually work- ing through various levels and at each level the standard of the players gets better and better...I am the only female in the Oceania region to have regional status.’’
She received a Prime Minister’s scholarship funding through High Performance Sport NZ to attend tournaments around New Zealand and Australia and to achieve assessments so she could gain her regional status. With her Oceania status, she was eligible to referee at the Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2018, she said.
‘‘Since I became a referee I had the Commonwealth Games in my sights...it is the ultimate pinnacle.’’
She was the first female referee to be the centre referee on a Professional Squash Association men’s 10K final, refereeing the Christchurch PSA final. She also was the centre referee at the New Zealand senior nationals men’s open final - the first time this has ever happened in New Zealand squash.
