Central Otago Mirror - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE - JO MCKENZIE-MCLEAN

The former Otago Regional Council candidate who lost his seat to media personality Michael Laws by five votes is seeking a recount.

Gary Kelliher, a Central Otago farmer, said he had applied on Monday to the court for an official recount of the Otago Regional Council Dunstan Constituency election.

‘‘After much thought and discussion with family over the weekend, I have decided to apply to the court for an official recount of the Otago Regional Council Dunstan Constituency election. I was disappointed in the outcome and for it to be such a close margin of five votes, we all agree that for peace of mind we need to complete the final step available which is a recount. I have also been humbled by the number of people and groups who have approached me over the weekend offering their support and encouragement recount.’’

He had told Laws he was seeking the recount and they had acknowledged to each other they would not begrudge a recount if the outcome was close should either choose to request it, he said.

Laws said he respected Kelliher for seeking the recount and wished him and his family ‘‘the best of fraternal wishes during what must be a stressful time.’’
