Healthy food & a fresh garden

Central Otago Mirror - - FOOD FOR THOUGHT -

There’s lots of really healthy options at Odelay and I chose the chicken salad with quinoa, pistachio, salad greens, sweet potato, grapes and beetroot relish ($17). It was a hearty feed and I loved the inclusion of pistachio for texture and flavour.

Karl chose the burger ($18.50) with chargrilled minced meat, chipotle sauce, edam, tomato and onions and served with homemade chips. He reported a delicious combination of flavours and among the best burgers he has had.

I can report that the accompanying Agria chips were a chunky slice of kiwiana, which took me back to Mum’s homemade Friday night chip special of the 1980s.

Both children ordered a kids lunch box ($8.50), which gives choice of a ham and cheese toastie, hotdog or hot chips. It

comes with fruit and cookie and juice. I thought the hotdog meal was very small but the chips were generous and I was pleased the kids decided to split their meals.

This large cafe was packed at lunch time but it was a pleasant enough day and we were happy to sit outside.

There’s a wall menu and cabinet and we stood in the queue while deciding our lunch orders. Only later did we discover the written menu.

About three-quarters of the way through our meal there was a slight wind change and a rancid smell. It took us a while to realise the culprit was most likely horse manure on a well cared for herb and vegetable garden pleasantly surrounding the outdoor seating area. It was unpleasant but understandably the likely result of good garden management.

More annoyingly in the outdoor area we discovered no sugar on any of the tables and I had to go begging from some indoor diners for a sachet. Later we asked for water and were directed inside to collect our own.

However, on the whole the service was very efficient and we were pleased with how quickly our meals arrived on an apparently busy day.

A great selection of really healthy and substantial food choices in a pleasant environment - except on the day the manure is reeking.
