Central Otago Mirror - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE -

It has been with great sadness we have watched the images and heard the stories of our friends and family affected by Sunday night’s terrible earthquake and the ongoing aftershocks.

It has also sparked a few conversations in our family and more than a little anxiety for the younger members in particular.

We have discussed with the children the possibility that one day we could also face a large earthquake in the Queenstown, Wanaka and Central Otago areas.

We have talked about what actions we should take, safe places to meet and what supplies we have available and where.

We truly hope we never have to put this into action but the reality is that many in the scientific world believe the Alpine Fault is due to move.

GNS science has said there was a 30 per cent chance of a large earthquake on the Alpine Fault in the next 50 years.

If anything good can come of this week’s tragic events it is that we are prepared for the future.
