Mad Mike recalls Crown Range drift

Central Otago Mirror - - CONCERTS - DASHA KUPRIENKO

Crown Range drifter ‘Mad’ Mike Whiddett was back in the region for more adrenalin as he raced at Highlands 101 on the weekend.

A regular in the region, he recalled drifting on 47 corners as fast as 230kmh in 2013 with the Queenstown mayor at the time, Vanessa van Uden as a passenger in a Mazda RX7.

‘‘She had full support and said ‘this is what Queenstown is all about, it’s all about extreme’.

‘‘At the end of the day we chucked her [van Uden] on the passenger seat and I took her for a lap on the Crown Range. Full attack mode and she really enjoyed it,’’ Whiddett said.

Van Uden screamed, he said. She was not available for comment, but has said it was one of the highlights of her mayoralty.

When drifting on the Crown Range the racer had to be focused and ‘‘on point mentally’’, he said.

The Crown Range had no safety zones, no barriers and was more dangerous than any racing track, which was part of the attraction.

‘‘If you crash on the Crown Range, if you go off the track, it’s just literally a cliff drop,’’ Whiddett said.

‘‘I’m an adrenalin junkie and that’s just the best way to prove myself as a driver and do these extreme things and that’s what I do.’’

While Mad Mike was still thinking of the next dangerous road to conquer, he demonstrated his drifting skills to an appreciative Highlands 101 audience on Saturday.

Whiddett loved the dynamic Highlands track and said it had ’’every variation of corner’’.
