Kuzma hosting sports film premiere
Wanaka Olympian free skier Janina Kuzma stars in a new allwomen, extreme sports film, Shades of Winter: Between, premiering at Cinema Paradiso on Friday and Saturday.
Kuzma is New Zealand’s top female free skier and stars alongside Olympic gold medallist Julia Mancuso, of the US, two-time Freeride World Tour champion Nadine Wallner, of Austria, Evelina Nilsson, of Sweden, pro skier and filmmaker Sandra Lahnsteiner, and the late Matilda Rapaport of Sweden.
Three-time world surf champion Carissa Moore features in two surfing segments.
The New Zealand premiere screenings will be an opportunity to see the 90-minute feature film before it is distributed more widely next year.
The screenings are also fundraisers for a foundation being set up to remember Rapaport, who died aged 30 in an avalanche in Chile on July 18.
Between was a two-year project for Lahnsteiner and features the women conquering challenging slopes in New Zealand’s Southern Alps, Alaska, Hawaii, Norway, Canada, and the European Alps.
It is the third film in the Shades of Winter series. Kuzma has featured in all three films, and initiated segments filmed on the Mount Larkins Range, near Glenorchy, as well as in and around Wanaka.
‘‘It was a dream of mine to one day get the [film] crew to New Zealand to film a segment. New Zealand has some of the best terrain in the world available by helicopter and I wanted to showcase that. When Sandra proposed the movie Between to me I said she had to film in New Zealand, and we made it happen.’’
Kuzma is ranked world no 4 in halfpipe and in Between returns to her big mountain skiing roots.
‘‘Even though I started out as a free rider, a lot of people know me as a halfpipe skier. It’s nice to be able to show people the other side of what I do, and that I still freeride.’’
Snowsports athletes attending the VIP premiere on November 25 include Beau-James Wells, Sam Smoothy, Nicola Campbell, Anna Smoothy, Sam Lee, Craig Murray and Fraser McDougall.
Cinema Paradiso, Friday November 25, VIP premiere, 8pm for drinks and nibbles. Saturday November 26, general public screening, 8.30pm. Tickets $15.
