The best street in town is ...

Finding the best street in Alexandra has been a breeze for competition organisers over the past few years. All they had to do was take a leisurely drive into Molyneux Estate and find Thyme Cres.

That’s where Lorraine and Gary McDonnell have lived for the past four years and coincidently, or not, Thyme Cres has been named the best street four out of the past five years.

Organised by the Keep Alexandra and Clyde Beautiful Society, the call has gone out for residents of other streets to try and de-throne the reigning champs.

Lorraine McDonnell is confident the ‘‘fantastic’’ Thyme Cres can finish ahead of the rest again.

She puts it down to people having pride in where they live, the colour, manicured gardens and grass verges and having regular social events.

‘‘I think it’s just the street’s colour,’’ McDonnell said. ’’It’s not hard to keep it green is it? I think we get the best view too.’’

Residents in the street had regular get-togethers, which helped the neighbourhood take pride in the street’s appearance.

‘‘It’s great. It’s quite a social street [and] the whole street is very friendly. We’re very happy here.’’

It helped that Thyme Cres had a number of people with extensive gardening experience who carried it on when they retired, McDonnell said.

Juniper Close resident Denis Cronin hoped his street could take out the title of best cul-de-sac for the third year running.

‘‘Everybody is very conscious of the appearance of both the gardens and the grass verges in the cul-de-sac,’’ Cronin said.

Residents also worked together to ensure the upkeep of a nearby greenway while the area was still in development.

‘‘It really does set off the street.’’

Cronin acknowledged charging for water played a part in a street’s appearance, but believed it was a small price to pay to have pride in your street.

Keep Alexandra and Clyde Beautiful Society best street organiser Kathy Spain said there was no specific entry requirement for the competition. Streets and culde-sacs in Alexandra and Clyde would be judged on gardens, verges and overall look between February 18 and 23.

‘‘It’s actually encouraging people to take pride in their gardens and promote Alexandra as a place.’’

Winning streets would be announced at the end of February and a ‘‘best street’’ sign would be erected.

‘‘Now is the time to spruce up your garden and help to win this award for your street.’’
