BRUTAL, BUT STUNNING
The Pioneer mountain bike races start on Friday from Christchurch, heading down the Southern Alps. There are two events - one for teams of two over seven days involving 545km of riding and 15,508m of climbing and finishing in Queenstown on Saturday. Individuals compete over four days, completing 310km and 8402m of climbing - finishing at Lake Ohau. Those who competed last year loved the stunning scenery, and the ‘‘brutal’’ nature of the challenge.
