Dan Abel smashes Big Ruby record
Christchurch marathon swimmer Dan Abel smashed The Big Ruby swim record in Wanaka on Saturday, charging around the picturesque 3.8km course in 49:45.
The previous record for twice around Ruby Island was 51:39, set by Wanaka’s Mark Cockroft last year.
Among the 307 swimmers racing a range of distances were Paralympians Cameron Leslie, of Whangarei, and Wanaka’s Hamish McLean.
They took part in a 600m dash to Ruby Island from Waterfall Creek.
Wanaka teenager, Emily Heath, 13, won the women’s 3.8km race in 59:24 and was 11th overall.
The 2.5km race - once around Ruby Island - was won by Natasha Flude, Wanaka (34:17) and Flynn Sinclair, Invercargill (30.49).
