Central Otago Mirror - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE -

It confuses me that I have been drawn to living much of my adult life in the mountains.

I do love our alpine lives - particularly walking, skiing, biking and viewing the mountains as well as making the most of our incredible water ways. But that’s the thing. Lakes are good but oceans are great.

On Waitangi weekend I stayed in a run down shack of a Kiwi crib on Curio Beach with good friends and it was marvellous.

Despite wind and even rain sometimes, the highlight for everybody was body boarding in the surf alongside some of the playful Hector dolphins who have made the area their home. Turns out there were a few future surfers among us. We swam, we walked in the soft sand and we sat warm inside viewing the waves crashing and staring at the open horizon.

I’m not proposing a shift just yet but I do plan to spend more time enjoying life on the coast - when I can pull myself away from the mountains.
