Best regional restaurant in NZ in Ophir
Pitches Store owner Colleen Hurd puts her cafe and restaurant’s latest accolade down to team work.
The Central Otago establishment’s reputation was boosted again after it was last week named Silver Fern Farms Best Regional Restaurant in New Zealand for the second year running.
Head chef Daniel Hill was named runner-up in the Premier Master of Fine Cuisine category.
Hurd was ‘‘elated’’ with the win.
‘‘We were pretty chuffed and Dan [Hill] was pretty chuffed. It means a lot.’’
Hill’s judged dish was Eye of the Mist – an eye fillet, beef cheeks and bone marrow ensemble.
The win was really good for business, Hurd said.
‘‘It does a lot for the business and for the locals.
‘‘We’ve had people wanting to book in for dinner and wanting to know if Dan’s cooking.’’
Being an isolated town with a population of about 50, Pitches needed to be a ‘‘destination’’, Hurd said.
‘‘We all work really hard and it’s a team [effort].’’
The ‘‘locals are really proud’’, Hurd said.
