New event to feature in rail trail race

Central Otago Mirror - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE - STAFF REPORTER

Mountain bike races have been added to the Otago Central Rail Trail’s flagship multisport event.

Race director Graeme Duncan, of the Maniototo Lions Club, said they were excited to feature a new event this year to be held on February 25 and 26.

‘‘In addition to the multi-day or single day duathlons we have introduced mountain bike races.’’

Competitors could choose to race as individuals or a team. Race one was 91km which started in Clyde and finished in Ranfurly. Race two was 59km and started in Ranfurly and finished in Middlemarch.

The multi-day duathlon had been held in the last weekend of February for the past 18 years, he said.

‘‘It coincides with the official opening of the trail.’’

Hundreds from around the region regularly participated in the Rail Trail Duathlon.

‘‘The beauty of it is you don’t have to be an elite athlete to enjoy the experience. It’s all off road and is great for school or sporting groups, business teams and newbies to the multi-sport scene.’’

Prizes included a $2000 holiday in New Zealand, he said. Register at railtrailduathlon.com.
