Playcentre on the move

Central Otago Mirror - - EASTER - DASHA KUPRIENKO

Frankton playcentre is changing its name and location next month.

The soon-to be Wakatipu Playcentre will be based in the former Porter home at Remarkables Park.

Playcentre secretary Olivia Day said the playcentre was on the move from its location next to Remarkables Primary School as the school needed more space to allow for the fast-growing student roll.

It was ‘‘awesome’’ the Ministry of Education helped secure the 1200sqm site next to the new Wakatipu High School site.

‘‘A 20-year lease has been negotiated with the ministry with no option for them to break early, and also for additional space to remain so the playcentre can generate income through hiring out rooms if they wish,’’ she said.

Upgrading from a 400sqm building meant the roll could rise from 25 to about 34 children. The bigger site would also present new opportunities for the children.

‘‘We will be able to do a vegetable garden and a little more outdoor play.’’

The old outdoor swimming pool had been redesigned into a sand pit for the children.

Frankton playcentre’s team and parents thought the name change to Wakatipu was suitable due to the growing geographical catchment of playcentre families. The Wakatipu Playcentre will move to the new site on May 15.
