Hockey turf and building completed

The new hockey amenities building has officially opened and marks the completion of the upgraded Pioneer Energy Turf in Cromwell.

Central Otago Sports Turf Trust chairman Michael Paardekooper welcomed the large crowd attending the opening on Friday.

The project started in 1995 when the Central Otago Hockey Association approached a group about establishing a new hockey turf for Central Otago.

Proceeds of a land sale from the Cromwell Community Board provided seed funding for the new facility, he said.

‘‘This new building not only looks good but provides the sporting community and in particular Central Otago Hockey players and supporters with changing rooms, toilets, showers, hockey controllers’ room, kitchen, meeting room, base for Central Otago Hockey Association, storage and a warm dry place for spectators to watch hockey.’’

It took three years to design, plan and fundraise for the new turf and building, and the project was completed within the $1.8 million dollar budget. The trust was also debt free, he said.
