Central Otago Mirror - - OUT & ABOUT -

Christchurch violinist Cathy Irons visits Wanaka and Alexandra with the Central Otago Regional Orchestra on May 20 and 21.

The South African-born musician will perform the exquisite Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor with the orchestra, conducted by Aart Brusse.

‘‘This concerto is an ever-time favourite of mine. Since I was a child not yet able to play the violin, I used to listen to it in awe. It feels like a dream come true, to now have the facility to play it and to express every note from my own heart.’’

Irons is a popular and regular performer in Otago and performed the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the orchestra a few years ago.

She has also hosted frequent Thomas Brown Art Gallery performances at Lake Hayes and in 2015 gave the first public recital on Michael Hill’s personal violin, a 1755 Giovanni Battista Guadagnini named ‘‘The Southern Star’’.

Irons said she enjoyed performing for the Otago community,. ‘‘Whenever I play here, I sense an openness. It is no longer me playing for an audience, but me enjoying the music together with them, sharing the experience.’’ Irons performs baroque, classical, contemporary and jazz music and is described as a vibrant and dynamic performer with a great connection with her audience.

Irons will return to Queenstown in late October with her band, the Classical Jazz Quartet.
