Central Otago Mirror - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE -

The Otago Regional Council (ORC) is regularly accused of being Dunedin-centric.

Last week I was looking for information about the upcoming by-election on the ORC website. Frustrated I could not find the dates I emailed the returning officer, who happens to be based at the Dunedin City Council (DCC).

She sent me the link to all of the information I required - on the DCC website.

I pointed out that I thought this was a bit odd. It is an ORC byelection and it is for the Dunstan Ward. Voters therefore live in the Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago District Council areas. Indeed it never crossed my mind to check the DCC website.

The information is now on the ORC website (still with a link to DCC for information on the candidates) but if the ORC wants to be considered more open and available to its rate payer base it would do well to re-consider its communication channels.
