Central Otago Mirror - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE -

Liam Keenan credits his $700 mountainbiking helmet and safety gear for saving him from more serious injuries.

As it is, he is now facing life in a wheelchair after damaging his spine when he crashed from his bike at the top of the Skyline track in Queenstown about a month ago. But he is right. A serious head injury would have made things even worse for him.

Which makes me wonder why some people still have issues with wearing helmets.

I’m not sure what is more dumb - riding a bike without a helmet or riding with your helmet on - but undone, with straps flapping on the sides. I’m pretty sure it must be the latter.

And it amazes me that parents send their children off to school on scooters without a helmet.

Finally, there are still a few who choose not to wear helmets on the ski slopes. It’s not just for safety, you know. There’s nothing better than a snuggly warm helmet wrapped protectively around your noggin.
