Fresh choice for food buyers
A second supermarket is under construction in Cromwell.
Progressive Enterprises confirmed last week Fresh Choice would open on the corner of Iles St, Sargood Rd and State Highway 8B opposite BP 2go Cromwell.
Progressive spokeswoman Kate Porter said they were ‘‘really excited’’ to bring Fresh Choice to Cromwell.
‘‘[This is] a great opportunity to bring a Fresh Choice to this area. Ultimately our driver is to make sure that any store is going to best serve the community.’’
Porter was unable to confirm an opening date or the owners of the new store and how many jobs it would generate.
‘‘We will let people know...further down the track.’’
Along with Fresh Choice, Progressive controls Countdown, Super Value and Woolworths supermarkets across New Zealand.
Cromwell Business Group spokesman Greg Wilkinson said it was positive.
‘‘I think most people would be supportive of having another choice.
‘‘It’s just symbolic of the growth happening not only in Cromwell but in Central Otago.’’
New World Cromwell, part of Foodstuffs Ltd, is the only major supermarket in Cromwell presently. It opened in April 1997.
New World Cromwell owneroperator Phil Ryan was not prepared to comment.
Work is underway at the site of Fresh Choice Cromwell.
