Central Otago Mirror - - FOOD FOR THOUGHT - SERVICE: VERDICT:

Name: The Observatory Restaurant Address: 32 Frankton Rd, Millenium Hotel Phone: 03 450 0150 Hours: 6pm - 10pm Ratings: Atmosphere 1/2, Food 2/4, Service 3/4 Total: 6/10 Reviewer: Dasha Kuprienko

When we entered the restaurant, we stopped by a ‘‘please wait to be seated’’ sign. It took a couple of minutes for anyone to notice us. We had no booking and were not staying at the hotel, which seemed to confuse the barman. Eventually we were asked to write down a name and that provided our entry.

The barman brought us water and menus, mumbled the chef’s specials and left in a hurry. No time to take questions. However, the waitresses were smiley and provided some great banter.

When we arrived, four tables were taken, but within half an hour when all guests but us had left the restaurant, staff started setting up the area for tomorrow’s buffet breakfast. We didn’t mind - on a quiet night might as well prepare ahead.

The food was affordable for a fine dining restaurant. There were a lot of options for meatlovers, but watch out for any burned edges. Perfect for a quiet dining experience.
