Central Otago Mirror - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE -

The last few days have been testing.

On Thursday I burned my toast, forcing about 100 people to evacuate Brownston House, in Wanaka. About 12 volunteer firefighters downed tools and responded in two fire appliances.

On Sunday I took a late afternoon lake swim with friends.

In the middle of the lake (about 12 degrees), our kayak escort demonstrated the quality of the mountain echo.

He didn’t yodel or coo’ee. He roared. We thought it was funny and asked him to do it again. You could almost count to 10 before the sound bounced back.

Inevitably, someone thought we were in distress and called 111.

The police and the Wanaka Coastguard greeted us as we came ashore.

News travels fast in a small town. By Monday I was toast. The kayaker has left the country.

Sorry. Thank you to Wanaka’s volunteers for being there so quickly.
